Stanford is a private research university in Stanford， California. Located about 37 miles (60 km) southeast of San Francisco and approximately 205 miles (330 km) north of Los Angeles， the University’s sprawling campus occupies some 8，180 acres（占校园面积的一半以上）in an area commonly known as Silicon Valley——the hub of global high technology that has become synonymous with "the internet".
The institution was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford， who had made his fortune as a central Pacific Railroad financier和老板，and Jane Lathrop Stanford， in memory of their only child， Leland Jr.， who died of typhoid fever at age 16. The school's first president was David Starr Jordan， the former president of the University of Michigan， and its main library holds over nine million volumes.

The school has been frequently ranked among the top universities in the world.
